From vineyards across the world, our Fine and Rare Wine and Spirits auction on Thursday 13 October, offers an exciting selection of wines. Here Mark Robertson, Head of Dreweatts Wine and Spirits department, tells you more about Sassicaia from the Tenuta San Guido vineyard.
After reading about how the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta came to acquire Tenuta San Guido, I really need to speak to my father-in-Law about dowries...
Located in coastal Tuscany outside the village of Bolgheri, production in the region is traditionally focused on light and easy drinking wines. With Mario’s vision to emulate the wines of Bordeaux on the similar gravelly soils (Sassicaia means 'the place of many stones'), he boldly planted Cabernet Sauvignon, and the seeds of the first Super Tuscan were sown.
The first 20 vintages of Sassicaia were never released and only consumed at the estate. A few cases were laid down every year to evaluate the ageing potential and it was only in 1968, after encouragement from friends and family, that a nervous Mario released the wine onto the commercial market. An icon was born and now, very much grown-up, is considered one of the world's most fabled wines. The landmark 1985 is considered one of the greatest wines ever made. I was lucky to try it once and such reverence was given to it, that it was like going up for communion. The wines are now seen across the world - from the finest cellars to David Beckham’s Instagram page.
We are delighted to be able to sell a flight of Sassicaia, with vintages from 2012, 2018, 2019, in bottles and a variety of rare large formats. As with all Sassicaia, patience rewards those who wait, but the 2012 is approachable and very enjoyable now. For the 2018 and the modern classic 2019 - hide the cellar key for a few years.
