Managing Estates: Probate & Market Valuations

Central to our business is the personal and confidential professional advice we offer individuals, executors, lawyers, agents, trust companies, family offices and fiduciary agents in helping them manage collections and individual objects.

Established in 1759 Dreweatts has generations of expertise in long term planning. We are one of the leading UK auction houses and market leaders in managing single owner collections.

Probate Valuations

Working with individuals and professional clients we offer a tailored Probate Valuation Service.

  • In order to complete your probate submission for HMRC, you are required to obtain an accurate appraisal of an estate’s assets at the current open market value and complete the IHT 407 form. Our valuations are set out in the same format as the IHT407 forms making it easier to complete.
  • We can value the entire contents of a house or selected items as specified including fine art, jewellery, watches, antique furniture and works of art, contemporary art and design, specialist collectables, artwork, wine, silver, and household items. Valuations are undertaken by our experienced team of specialists.
  • In accordance with legal guidance we are required to itemise objects worth £1,500 or more individually. Objects that fall below this value are represented as part of group totals.
  • We can of course also provide a more comprehensive valuation if required for family division or for specifically bequeathed items.
  • Once probate has been granted, our team of specialists can advise on a sales strategy through our calender of specialist sales or by Private treaty.
  • We can manage a complete house clearance service should this be of use.

Market Valuations

In making long term decisions, market valuations are an essential tool in maintaining a fiscal view of a collection or single item. Our confidential valuations are provided for all aspects of the art market.

  • We offer a free initial meeting to discuss your requirements.
  • Our Valuations are fully researched and illustrated and can be produced either as bound copies or a secured digital document.
  • Market valuations form a key part to advising clients on:

    • Possible sales
    • Estate planning and Capital Gains Tax
    • Gifts in Lieu and Exemptions
    • Pre-owned Assets and Leaseback
    • Family Division
    • Private Treaty Sales

Additional Services

Valuations may only be part of the solution and we can also provide advice on other related services:

  • Storage and Safe Keeping. We understand that security of the assets can be a concern and can help provide advice and make arrangements for removal and safe storage of valuable items
  • Restoration. We have long term relationships with key restorers and can help advice on curatorial issues.
