On Wednesday 24 April our sister company, Forum Auctions, has its auction Spring Selection: Modern and Contemporary Art and Editions. The auction includes works by artists such as John Piper, Albert Irvin, Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, Murakami, STIK. Amongst the selection, are four exciting lots which are being sold to raise funds for The Margate School, Kent an independent, postgraduate, liberal arts school, and a not-for-profit organisation. Here, Forum Auctions' Junior Specialist in the Editions and Works on Paper department, Eleanor Garthwaite, tells us more about these works.
We are thrilled to be offering these four works in our upcoming Spring Selection auction to raise money for The Margate School in Kent. Each artwork has been generously donated by the artist to support this important art school and its creative community. The Margate School is driving fundraising so that they may offer bursaries to students and can continue to make the arts accessible to everyone. They rely heavily on donations, and we hope that this cause will encourage strong bidding on the day.
On offer, we have a pair of portraits by the Moroccan photographer and artist, Hassan Hajjaj, whose works have gained acclaim for its subversion of the western touristic gaze. In his portraits, Hajjaj acknowledges the allure of orientalism (such as fetishized women shrouded by veils) but re-imagines this, giving power to the sitter and framing the works in bold woven rubber or fabric.
Another of the featured lots is an original work on paper by British illustrator Gerald Scarfe. It is an example of the artist’s iconic collaboration with Pink Floyd for their chart-topping album, ‘The Wall’. The album that featured the hit lyrics "We don’t need no education" was also envisioned as an animated film, which Scarfe created in 1982. It is one of the important preparatory works for the film, which the artist created while working with the band.
The sale also includes a mixed media painting by Rock and Roll icon, Peter Doherty, whose white canvas is drawn into with recognised motifs such as lyrics, dripping paint, ghostly outlined figures, a syringe, which he often revisits to raise questions around addiction.
Finally, we have this work by multidisciplinary artist, Shem. His work, which he categorises as 'chaotic expressionism' is deeply personal and explores the things which make us strong and those that set us back.
