Dreweatts is pleased to present a group of three works by German artist, Gernot Kissel direct from the estate of the artist. These will be offered in our Art Live auction taking place on 6 June. Here, Head of Sale, Francesca Whitham, tells us more about the artist and these works.
Self-taught artist, Gernot Kissel was born in Worms, Germany in 1939. He trained as an engineer and architect, before turning to painting at the age of eighteen. In true German Expressionist style, comparable to that of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel and Alexej von Jawlensky, many of his works feature vibrant colours, bold lines, and fast, visible brushstrokes. Kissel enjoyed working into his canvas material, using his thumb or spatula to create an expressive surface texture. His use of bold tones, with intense contrasting colours, produced eye-catching blocks divided by stark black lines.
Kissel is known for his female nudes, depicted in confident, self-assured poses and composed of rich, vibrant and warm hues in red, orange and yellow. In addition to his female nudes, Kissel also completed many landscapes and still life's, applying his style to a variety of subjects. He was particularly drawn to Mediterranean landscapes due to the colour of surrounding flora and sea, and similarly, his still life paintings frequently feature bright flowers in expressive colours.
Kissel died in 2008, having successfully exhibited throughout the UK, Switzerland, Austria, France, Belgium and Germany, with works currently on display in many museums and private collections across Europe.
