Coming up over the next few months, we are delighted to be offering the private collection of a distinguished gentleman, across our auctions this summer and autumn. The collection, titled An Englishman in Amsterdam, features a curated group of furniture, works of art, and fine art which has been accumulated over many years, mainly from Continental Europe. Here, we find out more about the journey of a passionate collector.
"When I first lived in Brussels, quite literaly overlooking the Sablon Antiques Market, I was quickly educated into the novel world of continental art and antiques, having grown up in a very English and traditional environment. It was a wonderful primer. Later, after moving to Amsterdam, I was thus set on a happy path of pursuing and collecting the wonderful furniture, art and decorative items so readily available - luckily for me the Dutch seemed to have a preference for as modern as they could find. Relative nearness to Antwerp and Paris also contributed to the fun. For one property I bought, overlooking the Keizersgracht, I employed a decorator and when asked what style I was looking for, I rather pretentiously replied: "St. Petersburg 1830". The bug had truly bitten! I thoroughly enjoyed the hunt and now, having returned to England, I hope other folk will enjoy these paintings and objects as much as I have".
Beginning on 4 June, our Art and Interiors sale includes selected items of furniture, works of art, lighting and art. This is followed on 10 June by a group of portraits in our auction of Old Masters, British and European Art, including works attributed to Mary Beale and John Richardson. Other works will also be offered in further auctions throughout the summer and autumn months.
