On 4 & 5 July we have our Fine Wine, Champagne, Port and Spirits auction. On Day Two, we are pleased to be offering several important and historic bottles of Cognac and Armagnac, originally part of the cellar of the Parisian restaurant, Tour d'Argent (Lots 420-424). Here, Dreweatts Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson tells us more about this establishment and the bottles we will be offering.
Founded in 1582, the Tour d'Argent is world famous for many things: it is the oldest restaurant in Paris, framed by romantic views of Notre Dame; the rather barbaric pressed duck, where the poor young bird is first suffocated and then served with its own blood sauce - macabrely you are also presented with a postcard of a jolly looking duck serving it; but perhaps, most pertinently is the legendary list of some 15,000 wines in an appetite inducing 9kg/ 400-page book - and this is just a glance at the 450,000-bottle cellar.
The restaurant’s reputation, although having slightly dimmed due to losing two Michelin stars, continues to captivate the world and the wattage is still supplied by diners such as Elton John (partial to the Roederer Cristal obviously), and Boris Yeltin (who rather surprisingly enjoyed a 1990 Chambertin Clos de Beze).
We are delighted to be able to offer several bottles of Cognac and Armagnac originally part of this great cellar, having been sold by them in 2012. It is impossible to say when they were first acquired, but on researching the sale and how the bottles were discovered, I am very confident that the Tour d’ Argent cellar was their only home previous to the current owners. The bottles have been stored in perfect conditions since 2012.
This is an online only auction, taking place on Tuesday 4 & Wednesday 5 July, 12 noon BST.
