Dreweatts Modern & Contemporary Art auction on 22 October saw strong and consistent interest across all sections of the sale. Jennie Fisher, Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, takes a look at some of the highlights.
The undoubted highlight was Rising Kite, Clare Island Cycle by Irish artist John Shinnors, an impressive canvas dating from 1998. Competitive bidding from no less than 8 trade and private buyers from across the world ensured that this monumental work achieved a hammer price of £40,000 - four times its pre-sale low estimate.
Combining juxtaposed abstract shapes with familiar motifs such as kites, the present work was a seminal example of Shinnor's bold expressive style. The hammer price reflected the fact that for many, this was quite simply the best example of Shinnors’ series of kite paintings.
Another large-scale canvas by Bill Jacklin found a new home with a UK private buyer achieving a hammer price of £15,000. Titled Cherry Tree with Dog, Great Lawn, the work depicted the iconic Great Lawn in Central Park, New York. It was a sublime example of Jacklin's pre-occupation with the interplay between light, shadow, and movement. His flowing, almost dreamlike figures, so reminiscent of Seurat’s pointillist compositions from over a century before, endowed the work with a timeless quality.
Two works by continental artists Manuel Colmeiro and Roger Marcel Limouse also recorded strong results and went to Spanish and US private buyers respectively. The sale included a number of private collections, all of which performed very well demonstrating once again that whatever the price point, the appeal of works fresh to the market, put together by dedicated collectors, catches the imagination of buyers.
It was also fantastic to see strong prices for artists such as Victoria Crowe and Michael Leonard, both with their own inimitable style.
Overall, we were extremely pleased with the sale result, achieving an auction total of £396,625. We were particularly delighted with the breadth of buyer participation with successful bidders from across Europe and the US, highlighting the international appeal of our Modern and Contemporary Art auctions.
