On Thursday 13 June, we have our Interiors auction, offering furniture and decorative objects for the home. The auction also includes selected items from Fawley Manor in Berkshire. Ahead of the auction, we take a look at some of the highlights.
A hundred years before the owners of this collection arrived at the house, Fawley Manor inspired Thomas Hardy to give the surname ‘Fawley’ to the main protagonist in his novel ‘Jude the Obscure’.
Fawley Manor, on the North Wessex Downs, has been home to this collection for the last four decades. The contents offered for sale hold a visceral sense of the rich history of the house, indeed many were thoughtfully chosen to sit within the old hall and oak room of the Jacobean Manor house which is an architectural blend of ‘Castle meets House’.
The Collection ranges from giltwood and silvered wood brackets and lamps, iron strong boxes, shields and swords; to Spanish trestle tables, embossed leather chairs, period framed oil paintings and walnut cabinet made furniture – curated pieces that are suited to make the leap from 17th century interiors to modern minimalist living alike.
From a private collection in Northamptonshire, we have Lot 339, a large pair of 19th or 20th century French ormolu mounted rouge griotte marble brûle parfums, also known as incense burners. Brûle parfums feature miniature stores, called réchauds, where pastilles or sweet-smelling essences were heated, releasing aromas into the room. This pair were designed in the manner of Daguerre.
The auction also features a wonderful selection of decorative arts and modern design items. A particular highlight is Lot 320, Acorn by Kate Malone (B. 1959). Kate Olivia Malone MBE is a British studio potter and ceramic artist, known also for her work as a judge on BBC2's The Great Pottery Throw Down. The present lot comes to auction from a private collection. It is a dish and cover naturistically modelled after an acorn. It is decorated in yellow and brown glazes, with reliefs of oak leaves and acorns.
Another fun item is Lot 352, a set of eighteen mid-20th century silvered and reverse painted placemats. Each is decorated with a fowl motif. These are made in the manner of Fornasetti, the luxury artistic design company founded by Piero Fornasetti in 1940. The company, now run by Piero's son Barnaba, is known for its porcelain and handmade decorative objects for the home.
