Dreweatts' September Transport Sale leads with The Collection of the late Mr Fred Sansome (lots 1 - 83).
Fred Sansome was a keen railway enthusiast and was well known in the Midlands for collecting Gauge 1 locomotives. Not only did he collect these wonderful engineering masterpieces for his own pleasure but, realising his hobby was of interest to others, he began selling model railway items from his grocer’s shop Sansomes in the Warwickshire village of Grendon, and then from the many Barry Potter run railway shows all over the Midlands.
Due to his reputation and knowledge for all things relating to steam engines, Fred’s trains have travelled all over the world, including as far as Australia and have appeared in blockbuster films such as the much-acclaimed Paddington. Fred never stopped loving the hands-on experience too, frequently visiting steam railways to ride on the real thing and even building a replica Thomas the Tank Engine which stood outside the shop for many years much to the delight of local children.
His extensive private collection, which he started in the 1960s, was always displayed for everyone to enjoy, and was a pleasure he loved to share with as many fellow train aficionados as possible.
In many ways The Transport Sale is a fine tribute to his incontestable passion as his collection is now shared in a different way, with his locomotives beginning new journeys to destinations far and wide.
