A stunning Private Collection of Georg Jensen silver | 7 November 2018
A remarkable Private Collection of George Jensen silver will be offered at Dreweatts, Donnington Priory, on 7 November 2018.
The extensive 150 lot group was acquired directly from Georg Jensen in the past 20 years and features every imaginable piece to create the most stylish dining table, as we look ahead to the festive season.
Georg Jensen (1866-1935) was educated in both the fine arts and metal smithing and he opened his first silversmithy in 1904 in Copenhagen. His beautiful Art Nouveau designs in silver were of the finest quality and they soon became popular and he expanded his Copenhagen headquarters; by the 1920s he also had premises in Berlin, London and New York.
Johan Rohde
A number of designers worked for Georg Jensen, notable amongst these was Johan Rohde (1856-1935) who was also a painter and lithographer. Rohde played an important role in the development of Danish craftsmanship through his work at Jensen.
Acorn pattern
Johan Rohde's Acorn pattern features in the collection in the form of cutlery, table services and dinner plates.
A variety of designs
Other designs in the collection include: Cherry, Grape, Poppy, Louvre, Cosmos, Melon, Blossom, Louvre, Bernadotte and Sølv bud, and across a wide range of objects for the dining table, namely: pedestal bowls, candlesticks, candelabra, sauce boats, vegetable dishes and covers, pitchers, jugs, centrepiece bowls and trays.
Sigvard Bernadotte
Sigvard Bernadotte (1907-2002) the Swedish prince and industrial designer also contributed to the firm’s output.
His Bernadotte jug is recognised as one of his most enduring signature pieces.
The collection includes strawberry bowls, cream jugs, vases, bowls and a soup ladle in the subtle and stylish Bernadotte design.
