From Australia to the International Stage

Born in Geelong, Australia, in 1931, Devlin studied gold and silversmithing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before receiving a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art in London. His international education continued with a Harkness Fellowship at Columbia University in New York, experiences that helped shape the broad and innovative approach that would define his career.

A Career Defined by Innovation

Devlin first achieved international recognition in 1964 when he won the competition to design Australia’s first decimal coinage. This marked the beginning of an extraordinarily varied career. Alongside his work as a goldsmith and silversmith, he designed coins and medals for countries around the world, as well as jewellery, furniture, clocks, trophies and ceremonial objects.

Developing a Distinctive Style in London

In 1965, Devlin established his own workshop in London, where he developed the distinctive style for which he became best known. His designs frequently combine geometric forms with elaborate surface decoration, including textured, polished and gilded finishes. The contrast between these surfaces gives his work a strong visual and tactile quality, while demonstrating the technical expertise of the craftsmen working in his studio.

Texture, Form and Contrast

Devlin brought a spirit of experimentation to his silverware, his bowls, goblets, boxes and tableware frequently feature complex textures and contrasting finishes, with gilded elements adding further richness to the designs.

Exploring the Decorative Possibilities of Silver

Rather than treating silver simply as a precious material, Devlin explored its sculptural and decorative possibilities. Surfaces become an integral part of the design, catching and reflecting light while inviting closer inspection. His work demonstrates how traditional silversmithing techniques could be adapted to create objects that felt distinctly modern.
