I have had this famous wine only once and it was many years ago. It was presented to me at a tasting as if I was being given communion or shots of water at Rorke’s drift. I remember it for the reverence given, but with no doubt it was the breathtaking quality which has always kept it in my mind.

It is described as an Italian masterpiece and has a reputation that continues to soar with every circle of the sun. Now, with only a handful of bottles remaining, the 1985 is one of those “I will get on a plane just to taste” wines as a client once described.

1985 at Sassicaia was a vintage that any winemaker would daydream about, and since then every piece of this beautifully complex jigsaw has fallen into place perfectly.

You don’t need me to sell it to you. That job was done by the estate 40 years ago. We are just here to present the wine in wonderful condition.

It is a great privilege to offer this remarkable wine in our April auction, alongside other legends such as Vega Sicilia from 1960-1990 and mature Opus One. This is a sensational private collection.

This is a live online auction with an auctioneer. The auction will take place on Tuesday 29 April (starting at 10.30am BST) at Dreweatts Newbury, but please note all wine and spirits are stored off-site at LCB Eton Park. Bidding is available online, by telephone, by commission bids or in person at Dreweatts.
