It records a moment in time that helped to shape an artist’s career and celebrate their work. Some exhibitions are spoken about years after they happened, take Richard Wilson’s oil slick which turned heads at the Saatchi when it was installed in 2010, Leonardo: A Life in Drawing which was hosted by the Royal Collection and went on tour around 10 different museums in the UK and of course The Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, this year alone featuring works by important artists Eileen Cooper, Philip Sutton and Bill Jacklin.
The collection includes the poster for the 1981 exhibition at Galerie Claude Bernard titled Les Mamelles de Tiresias l'Enfant et les Sortileges Parade (Lot 242). The colourful and wacky interior titled Montcalm Interior at Seven o’Clock (Lot 246) takes centre stage for the 1988 exhibition at 1853 Gallery, Salt Mill in Bradford. Other works include the XVI RIP Arles, 1985 (Lot 247) festival poster which depicts Theresa Russell posing nude during Hockney’s photo collage era. Also from this period is the Olympic Winter Games poster held in Yugoslavia titled Skater, New York (Lot 245).
