Henry Noel Humphreys Butterfly Prints

British illustrator, naturalist and entomologist Henry Noel Humphreys trained in Brussels before establishing himself as one of the leading natural history illustrators of the Victorian period. Although he worked across a range of subjects, he was particularly fascinated by butterflies. Published in 1841, British Butterflies and their Transformations by John Obadiah West featured Humphreys' finely observed coloured lithographs, demonstrating his remarkable ability to capture the intricate detail of each specimen.

Anouska Hempel Collection Screen

Renowned for her layered and atmospheric interiors, Anouska Hempel frequently incorporated screens to define space, filter light and create a sense of intimacy. This late 19th-century Victorian ash three-fold screen was formerly in Anouska Hempel's personal collection which was housed at her home, Shaw House in Wiltshire, and demonstrates her appreciation for versatile, sculptural furnishings that add depth and character to an interior.

Indian School Art

This striking 20th-century Indian School painting depicts a richly adorned horse, executed on silk using a traditional technique. Horses appear frequently in Indian art, symbolising status, power and nobility, while also holding associations with Hindu deities and the historic Chaturanga military formation of cavalry, infantry, elephants and chariots.

Egyptian Revival Sofa by Antony Little

Antony Little was a British creative whose influence helped shape the visual identity of an era. In 1968, Little together with his brother-in-law Sir Peter Osborne, co-founded the company Osborne & Little which would go on to become one of the most influential names in British interior design. Little was the creative engine, producing designs that combined historical reference with a bold, contemporary sensibility. Little's own designs reflected his flair for theatrical elegance and decorative wit. 

A highlight of the sale is this Egyptian Revival cherrywood sofa, which once formed part of Little's personal collection at his Chelsea home. The padded back and seat retain their original Osborne & Little multi-stripe upholstery, reflecting the designer's distinctive decorative style.

Hot Air Balloons

The sale also includes a number of paintings and prints celebrating the early history of ballooning. This late 19th-century French School painting depicts the first free ascent of a hot air balloon flight over Paris in 1783, one of the defining moments in the history of aviation. The achievement, made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes in a balloon designed by the Montgolfier brothers, marked the first untethered flight carrying human passengers.

Maison Jansen

Maison Jansen was one of the most influential international decorating firms of the 20th century. Founded in Paris in 1880 by Dutch designer Jean‑Henri Jansen, the firm became the first truly global interior‑design house, working for royalty, political leaders, and major tastemakers across Europe and the United States. Lot 1009, a table that is likely a Maison Jansen item, brings an element of glamour to the August Art & Interiors sale.

Greek Mythology

These 19th‑century alabaster groups, depicting Bacchus and Ariadne alongside Odysseus and Penelope, feel particularly timely as Greek mythology is enjoying a resurgence in popular culture, with The Odyssey capturing imaginations once again. Their gentle, intimate carving reflects the emotional heart of these ancient stories, giving the pieces a quiet charm that resonates with today’s renewed interest in classical narratives.
