On Tuesday 17 February, we are pleased to present our auction Fine Silver and The Art of Dining. The sale brings together a distinguished selection of iconic silverware, modern luxury porcelain and glassware, including a notable private collection of Anglo-French silver.
Spanning more than 300 years of silversmiths’ craftsmanship from the 17th to the 20th century, the collection reflects a lifelong passion rooted in the collector’s deep academic interest in the art of silver. A journey that began in the 1960s during visits to the United Kingdom, the collection was formed through acquisitions from leading antique dealers and celebrated markets, including Portobello Road.
The collection was ultimately displayed and enjoyed to its fullest in the family’s apartments in London’s Kensington and overlooking the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. Ahead of the auction, Head of Luxury, James Nicholson, shares further insights into the exceptional works on offer.
It is always an exciting privilege to bring together collections that have been passionately assembled with knowledge and a meticulous eye, and to curate them for a new audience. This sale includes a large Anglo-French collection of silverware, put together with connoisseurship and joie de vivre, that adorned apartments in Paris and London. There is a collection of silver from a Regent’s Park home, sourced from key dealers such as Guinevere Antiques in Chelsea, which was displayed to stunning effect in interiors designed by Louise Bradley. A private collection of Victorian claret jugs compliments other iconic silverware in a sale that spans over 400 years of the silversmiths craft. It has been a joy to combine period and modern silverware with branded porcelain and glassware to create a bold statement of timeless luxury.
The sale includes pieces from across the globe ranging from Britain, France, Italy, Germany, the United States and Zimbabwe, by some of the world’s most famous silver makers including Paul Storr, Garrard & Co., Frederick Elkington, Asprey, Gusatv Keller, Tiffany & Co, Buccellati, Stuart Devlin and Patrick Mavros. It has been the most marvellous opportunity to research each of these pieces and rediscover the people and stories behind them.
We are grateful to Tomasz Starzewski who has selected pieces from the sale to create the beautiful tablescapes shown throughout the catalogue. He provides inspiration for creating dramatic, colourful and elegant table arrangements, perfect for entertaining in the 21st century. The table linen photographed throughout the catalogue is from the collection designed by Tomasz Starzewski and is available from starzewski.com.
