On Wednesday 11 March, Dreweatts held its Modern & Contemporary Art to include ‘A World Observed: The Art of Julian Trevelyan’ auction. The sale presented a compelling selection of works by artists including Julian Trevelyan, Paul Lucien Maze and Sir John Lavery.
Reflecting on the day, Co-Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Jennie Fisher said “The auction saw strong prices across all categories, the highest price was reserved for an impressive Welsh view by Sir Kyffin Williams which made double the pre-sale estimate. Nic Fiddian Green’s elegant equine sculpture also doubled its estimate after competitive bidding from trade and private buyers.
A collection of works by Julian Trevelyan generated good interest with strong prices throughout including a view of Gozo which achieved £27,920 and a wonderful private collection of works by Paul Maze also garnered great interest, particularly depictions of Cowes Regatta and Goodwood, both subjects with which the artist is synonymous.
Three of the highest prices were achieved for paintings by Sir John Lavery, including a sketch of the House of Commons, dating from 1924, alongside a beautiful view of the Thames at Greenwich and one of Crystal Palace.”
