Dreweatts is delighted with the results from its Modern and Contemporary Art sale on 10 July 2025. The auction featured an eclectic mix of some of the most influential and important artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Man Ray, Glyn Philpot, Sir John Lavery, and Sir Stanley Spencer.
The sale opened with a series of paintings, drawings, and memorabilia from the estate of Sir Stanley Spencer including several preparatory studies for the artist's world-famous murals he created for the Sandham Memorial Chapel in Burghclere, Hampshire, as well as pieces by members of his family and close friends. John Spencer, grandson of the artist had this to say, "Stanley and the family would be truly delighted, Dreweatts has done the Spencers, the Carlines and Cookham proud."
With lively bidding online, via telephone, and in person, the sale totalled £1,288,112 (including buyer's premium). Co-head of Modern and Contemporary Art at Dreweatts Jennie Fisher commented, "The success of yesterday’s sale demonstrates the strength of the market for great quality works coming from private collections that are fresh to the market. This trend was across the board from Impressionist works to international modernism and home-grown modern British works and once again signals Dreweatts unique position in the market to offer interesting and diverse works to a global market."
