Maxwell Doig (British b.1966)

Maxwell Doig was born in Huddersfield in 1966. He trained at Manchester School of Art followed by the Slade and UCL in London. His work came to the notice of critics in the 1990s and in 1997 he won the coveted Villers David Prize.

The two works in this auction (also Lot 694 λ Fishing Boat, Dungeness) demonstrate Doig’s ability to bring significance to everyday subjects, to transform the ordinary into something of beauty and meaning. His treatment of the paint surface almost akin to photography, encompasses an overwhelming sense of calm and permanence, impervious to the strains of modern life. Although he does travel in order to find subjects for his work, Doig is primarily concerned with his much-loved home county of Yorkshire in which he finds endless inspiration. Deserted or decaying structures are of particular interest, imbued as they are with a memory of the life and industry that once went on there. Although a figure may not be present, the works evoke a kind of nostalgia for the human stories that once unfolded in their midst.
