Dreweatts' highly anticipated auction Japanese Prints: Art of the Woodblock will be held on 8 July 2025. One of the featured works for sale is lot 7: Under the Wave off Kanagawa - or simply The Great Wave. Dr Monika Hinkel from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of London elaborates on the history of this specific piece.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa, the print by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) from his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (1831), is one of the most internationally recognised images in Japanese art.

The work portrays a towering, frothing wave poised to engulf three small boats, with the serene silhouette of Mount Fuji in the background. This striking juxtaposition of nature's overwhelming ferocity contrasted with an enduring tranquillity captures a sublime moment that balances beauty and chaos, an effect that deeply influenced Western artists and poets.
