On Tuesday 14 & Wednesday 15 April, Dreweatts will hold a two-day auction, Modern Design & Decorative Art: To Include the Collection of Silka Rittson-Thomas. Offered on the first day, the collection of Silka Rittson-Thomas reflects a life spent in close dialogue with art, artists, floristry and objects of enduring character. Known as an art adviser and curator, her career has unfolded through a deep passion for the contemporary art world and the history of design. Years spent working with leading galleries and auction houses, together with decades advising private collectors, has informed an instinctive and highly personal approach to collecting, where connoisseurship is matched by curiosity and visual imagination.
As observed in a feature on her London apartment in The World of Interiors, Silka approaches the domestic interior as a living composition, allowing artworks to determine the atmosphere and visual impact of a space. Her interest lies in “what the pieces do, how they become the framers of the space”, and this is evident in how the furniture, design and decorative objects are gathered around in a thoughtful conversation. The result is an environment where periods and disciplines intersect contemporary painting beside mid-century design, studio ceramics alongside antique mirrors, humble flea-market discoveries complementing museum-quality works.
The selection offered here embodies this philosophy. It ranges across contemporary art, European and American design, ceramics, textiles, and carefully chosen antiques. Iconic twentieth-century designers sit comfortably beside vernacular or anonymous pieces unearthed during travels or long years of observation. Throughout, the emphasis is on objects with presence, works that carry the trace of the maker’s hand, unusual materiality, or sculptural form.
Silka’s professional life spent visiting studios, galleries, and collections across Europe, America and Asia has profoundly shaped the breadth of her interests. The works assembled in this catalogue reflect this international perspective and a collector’s delight in unexpected juxtapositions.
Taken together, the collection reveals a sensibility that is both scholarly and intuitive: one that values historical depth, contemporary creativity and the flare for collecting objects encountered in the course of a life immersed in art.
