In an age that prioritises brevity, Pallant House Gallery's School in Residence programme provides longer term creative engagement for local schools, enabling children and teachers to feel the full benefits.
As a Principal Partner, when we were discussing our support for the Gallery, we were keen for part of our donation to be allocated to their Public Programmes and specifically the School in Residence programme. Commenting on this, Dreweatts Chairman, Will Richards said, "From the outset, Pallant House Gallery has been a community-based gallery and its highly successful Public Programmes have been at the centre of its philosophy. At Dreweatts, we place great emphasis on maintaining the broadest possible access to the arts and believe that education is key to achieving this. We are therefore delighted to have the opportunity to support the School in Residence programme and to contribute to its important legacy."
Last year, the Gallery welcomed 151 visits from 90 schools and colleges. Whilst many school groups come for self-guided exploration or one-off workshops, the Gallery is keen to offer students the chance to have a longer term, more meaningful engagement. This is one of the pillars of their adult Community Programme, where they have already seen its very positive impact. The School in Residence programme is designed to include multiple visits over five weeks, with workshops and opportunities to interact with the temporary exhibitions and permanent collection. Familiarity grows confidence and sustained-looking allows for insight and inspiration. The pupils go on to produce their own creative responses, which feature in the School in Residence: Summer Exhibition.
There are challenges to facilitating a school’s participation. Tightening budgets mean schools have reduced funds for off-site visits, limited materials and resources for creative activities, and - at primary level - teachers receive minimal training to deliver this type of activity. To overcome these barriers, the Gallery offers professional development sessions for teachers and resources such as lesson plans. All the materials for Studio sessions are provided, and transportation costs are covered thanks to philanthropic support, enabling these inspiring school visits to take place.
“We work hard to extend our reach to schools that may lack access to cultural opportunities, including schools in deprived areas. It is important work that takes time and resources to do successfully, but the rewards are many.” Cynara Davies, Head of Public Programmes explains. “We build collaborative and sustained relationships with schools, supporting them to see the Gallery as a valuable part of their students’ art education. As we build on the success of the programme, we look forward to working with new schools, including supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities. We’re very grateful to partners like Dreweatts, as well as supporters such as the Eridge Trust, who make projects like this possible.”
