Earlier this year Dreweatts announced an exciting new collaboration for 2025 with de Gournay, the family run business specialising in the finest hand-painted and hand-embroidered wallcoverings. For the second chapter of this seasonal partnership, we will be showcasing pieces from our auction of Fine Furniture and Works of Art on 24 & 25 June, against the backdrop of de Gournay’s hand-painted Chinoiserie panels. This time, a new trio of framed panels have been chosen, conjuring the bright colours and vivid energy of Summer. Here de Gournay tell us more about their 'Erdem' pattern.
Created with fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu – celebrated for his signature oeuvre of halcyon romance – the eponymous Chinoiserie motif is a riotous rendition of nature in full bloom: a fitting backdrop to the assorted lots within the second edition of Dreweatts’ quarterly auction of fine furniture, antiques and works of art.
Executed in a trio of bespoke colourways representing 'summer', Hydrangea, Hollyhock, Irises, Chrysanthemum and Morning Glory jostle amidst a verdant lattice of branches, hand-painted onto specially chosen grounds of ‘Verde Chiaro’ dyed silk, ‘Cobalt Blue’ Williamsburg paper and ‘Golden Yellow’ dyed silk. Sparrows, Warblers, Pheasant and Egrets dart through the branches and foliage, playfully craning their necks and taking flight amidst the greenery, or elegantly stepping across the grass.
de Gournay’s Chinoiserie collection is based on the historic Chinese wallpapers that sparked a craze for a ‘Chinese’ style in royal palaces and grand houses across the Western world as trade between Europe and China flourished in the 18th century. de Gournay's faithful recreations celebrate the beauty of these originals, whose popularity remains undimmed by the passage of time.
Enhancing this photographic collaboration, the Fine Furniture, Sculpture, Carpets, Ceramics and Works of Art auction will offer three exclusive lots featuring de Gournay’s ‘Erdem’ Chinoiserie hand-painted panels (Lots 558-560). This provides a rare opportunity for design enthusiasts to acquire a piece of the brand’s signature craftsmanship at auction and integrate it into their own interiors.
