This spring, Dreweatts is pleased to be hosting the auction Little by Little: The Curious Collection of Antony Little. The auction, taking place on 12 May, will showcase the remarkable assemblage of one of London's most iconic creatives, Antony Little, whose designs and illustrations defined the swinging sixties.
Designer, artist, illustrator and tastemaker, Antony Little helped define the visual language of the 1960s Art Nouveau revival. This auction offers a rare glimpse into the creative life of a man whose work moved effortlessly between fashion, interiors, illustration and design.
Little illustrated numerous books, including a celebrated collection of short stories by Guillaume Apollinaire. Drawings from this series feature in the auction and capture the dark, playful, sensual and provocative spirit of the texts and have come to be regarded as works of art in their own right.
At the heart of London’s creative scene, Little collaborated with figures such as Julie Hodgess, Barbara Hulanicki, Michael Rainey and Nicky Haslam. His distinctive vision helped shape the look of iconic boutiques including Biba and Hung On You, placing him at the centre of a cultural moment that still influences design today.
He later co-founded the luxury British interiors house Osborne & Little, the most successful commercial venture of his career. The sale includes a number of his own designs, from a Pair of Toleware and Bronze X-Frame Tables to a Painted Simulated Bamboo Four-Post Bed, reflecting his flair for theatrical elegance and decorative wit.
Also offered are personal pieces from his Chelsea home, bringing the man behind the aesthetic into focus. Highlights include the drawing desk from where many of his designs were conceived, and a cased pair of his signature white Chelsea boots, handmade by his preferred Neapolitan cobbler. As Little once remarked “When I tried a pair of white shoes, that made all the difference. White shoes - I can wear with anything.”
Little by Little: The Curious Collection of Antony Little is more than a sale. It is a portrait of a creative life - bold, distinctive and unmistakably stylish.
