Rare 18ct Gold Watch with inscription from the Battle of Waterloo | Fine Clocks, Barometers and Scientific Instruments | Tuesday 9 September 2025

Coming up on Tuesday 9 September, we have our auction of Fine Clocks, Barometers and Scientific Instruments. Offered in the auction is a fascinating French 18 carat gold watch which is inscribed as being a prize from the battle of Waterloo.

The watch is a gilt full-plate single fusee pocket watch with a verge escapement, Tompion regulation, and a ting-tang quarter repeater striking on gongs. It features a finely decorated movement with engraved foliate motifs, silver regulation discs, and is signed Lebaute Cadet à Nanci.

The case includes an engraved inscription to the cuvette, ‘Prise a Waterloo, par Joseph Petty, Soldat du 3'me Bataillon, des Carabiniers, Le 18 Juin 1815, et presentee, au L't D, Macfarlane’. The engraving would suggest that the present lot was taken as a prize at Waterloo by Joseph Petty, a soldier of the 3rd Battalion of Carabiniers and then presented to Lieutenant Dugald Macfarlane.
