On Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 April, we are delighted to present our two-day auction, Modern Design & Decorative Art: To Include the Collection of Silka Rittson-Thomas. Ahead of the sale, Gemma Sanders, Head of Modern Design & Decorative Art, shares her insights into 20th-century design, with a particular focus on chairs.
20th century chair design was defined by a seismic shift, a desire for newness, clean lines, functionalism and most importantly innovation, embracing new materials like tubular steel, plywood, and plastics. Moving away from ornamentation, 20th century designers focused on dynamic forms and ergonomic pieces, often lightweight, and often designed to sustain industry's and society's need for increased production numbers. This was the beginning of the term 'Modern Design' and it continues to shape contemporary aesthetics today.
Here are my top five chairs from the upcoming Modern Design & Decorative Art auction, ranging from design icons to the most contemporary pieces:
Alvar Aalto’s Cantilever Model 31, with its bentwood frame and plywood seat, epitomises the clean lines and technical innovation of the 1930s. This example, dating from the late 1930s, has since become an icon of modern design. The auction also includes examples of Aalto’s popular L-shaped stool.
Finn Juhl's fascination with surrealism is evident in the Pelican Chair from 1940 - one of his most forward-thinking designs. Although it received early recognition, it was not put into production until 2001, 61 years after its debut.
Arne Jacobsen's egg chair is an undisputed icon, designed in the 1950s, this wonderful example dates from the early 1960s.
Szekely cork chair is as trendy as it gets, cork presented in a new way! A pair of his cube side tables also feature in the sale.
Functional - maybe not, but fun - definitely! It pushes us into the realm of "Art Furniture" and challenges us to take a seat.
