As we wrap up our 2024 auction calendar, we’re excited to present our final Fine Wine, Champagne, Vintage Port, and Spirits auction of the year. Perfectly timed for the festive season, this auction on 10 December features an exceptional array of wines, including the iconic 1982 Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande. Here, Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson tells us more.
When the Millennium rolled around, a major national newspaper published a story about "Desert Island Wines". The great and the good of the trade were asked about their favourite wine and what they would drink that night.
The usual suspects came up... 19th century Madeiras, 1914 Pol Roger, 1949 Mouton, Port from 1945, Bordeaux from 1961, the list goes on...
At the time, I was working at Justerini & Brooks. My boss, buying director and the wonderful Hew Blair, just looked at the Justerini & Brooks stock list. On this mythical island, while Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker were having a party enjoying their legends, Hew, further down the beach, was having a slightly faded Macon Villages and a Cotes du Rhone he had overstocked.
For my Desert Island Wines, the Pichon Lalande 1982 would be the first to be washed up. Dreweatts is now in the privileged position to offer a case of magnums. A wine that one so rarely witnesses - we are truly excited to offer this on the market. To put it simply, it is one of the great wines from the greatest of vintages and in a format rarely seen. Without doubt, it is first growth quality on steroids and the most exceptional wine to ever come out of this estate, and - whisper it loudly - maybe all of Bordeaux... all superlatives are exhausted!
This case was owned and forgotten about in the cellars of a hotelier on the south coast. It is now put up for sale by his son, and will be offered in our auction on 10 December.
The spotlight may be on this wine, but the rest of the cast in this auction is as wide as any sale I can remember and with a truly breathtaking and eye opening range of Bordeaux. From multiple vintages, formats and prices points, the opportunities to start or enhance your cellar are endless, allowing you to try new things or buy bottles that you have never seen before.
