On Wednesday 10 April, we have our Interiors auction. With a wide variety of items for the house and garden, including furniture, sculpture, carpets, ceramics, works of art and decorative objects, find that unique item for your home.
We are pleased to be offering a private collection from Berkshire (Lots 234-287), featuring a range of furniture, works of art, sculpture, engravings, rugs and lighting.
A particular highlight is Lot 234, a pair of mid 20th century ebonised and parcel gilt ‘pyramid’ open bookcases by John Fowler. They are designed in the Egyptian revival taste, highly fashionable in the Regency period. Following the Battle of the Nile (1-3 August 1798), there was a fascination with Egyptology, with researchers sent to catalogue Egyptian art and culture. For this reason, Egyptian motifs such as pyramids, sphinges and obelisks were found throughout furniture designs during the early 19th century.
Rich in character and style, antique furniture is ideal for adding warmth to a home. The sale offers a wide range of furniture, dating from the 17th through to the 19th century, as well as more modern examples in the period style. With timeless designs, we have pieces in the manner of late 18th and early 19th century designers such as Gillows, Howard & Sons, and William Trotter.
Highlighted here, we have Lot 302, an early Victorian mahogany hall chair, in the manner of Gillows, dating to circa 1840. The painted motif features a rampant tiger holding a scroll, which signifies that this chair was likely the property of the second son of a noble family.
The auction also features a wonderful array of decorative arts and modern design items, including glassware and ceramics from designers such as Clement Massier Golfe Juan, Keller & Guerin, Murano and Lalique.
Here we have Lot 341, an opalescent glass vase by Rene Lalique. Originally founded in 1888, Lalique is best known for producing glass art, including bowls, vases, clocks, perfume bottles, and hood ornaments during the early twentieth century. Dating from the second quarter of the 20th century, this vase is modelled in the Ceylan pattern. This design, featuring budgerigars perched amongst delicate foliage, was originally conceived in 1924 and not continued after 1947.
Sure to make a statement in any contemporary living space, we also have a selection of modern lighting. The auction includes examples by brands such as Ochre, Maoro Mori, Besselink & Jones, and John Stefanidis. A particular highlight is Lot 472, a Dandelion Pendant light by Richard Hutten For Moooi. At an impressive 82cm diameter, as its name suggests, it is modelled after a dandelion at the moment when its seeds are dispersed by a gust of wind.
