The Richness & Abundance of the Countryside in Art

Among the highlights is a selection of pictures that reflect the richness and abundance of the countryside. Capturing different aspects of country living, we have harvest scenes (Lot 1079), and agricultural traditions with pastoral views of cattle grazing (Lot 1072), as well as a charming study of mushrooms (Lot 1042). These works celebrate the changing landscape and the simple beauty of the countryside, bringing warmth, colour and narrative to an interior. Wheat: A Symbol of Harvest & Prosperity in Furniture Design

Complementing these works is a group of furnishings inspired by wheat, one of the most enduring symbols of harvest and prosperity. Lots 1013 and 1047 incorporate sculptural wheat sheaf motifs and natural forms, bringing texture, craftsmanship and a sense of the organic into the home. 

The tradition of wheat sheaf carvings in furniture design started in the Georgian period. It was used as a sign of allegiance to George III or 'Farmer George' as he was otherwise known, rather than to his son the Prince Regent, later George IV. George III preferred a simple domestic life, and had a firm interest in agriculture, thus leading to these motifs being associated to him and furniture of this period. 

Autumnal Accents

The sale also includes a number of practical country house pieces chosen for both their beauty and functionality. A handsome antique trunk (Lot 1023) provides the perfect place to store blankets and throws as evenings grow cooler. We then have an Art Deco boot scraper (Lot 1041) which offers a touch of traditional country house charm, ideal for muddy boots after autumn walks.

Completing the selection is a large Lorfords centre stool (Lot 1020), a wonderfully versatile piece that lends itself perfectly to cosy evenings indoors. Whether used as additional seating, a footrest, or simply as a focal point within a sitting room, it combines everyday practicality with style.

Together, these pictures and furnishings create a dialogue between nature and craftsmanship, celebrating the harvest season, rural traditions and the comforts of home.
