Coming up on Wednesday 14 January, we have our auction The Age of Oak: The Collection of Michael Eaton at Humphreston Hall which showcases a remarkable selection of fine oak furniture, English School and 19th century paintings alongside ceramic and metalwares reflecting the craftsmanship of the period. The curated selection embodies the quintessential English country house interior, reflecting Michael Eaton’s keen eye for fine furniture, honed over more than three decades as an antique dealer, and his enduring commitment to character and quality.
The collection tells the story of two generations, Michael and his son Oliver, united by a passion for history and craftsmanship. Highlights include early and mid-17th century oak furniture, such as Charles I and II livery cupboards and a Flemish refectory table, showcasing historic forms and skilled joinery. Complementing these are important decorative objects and paintings, including a rare Charles II pewter flagon, a portrait of Henry V, the original of which is held in the Royal Collection in Windsor, and various examples reflecting the British heraldic tradition.
Notably, the sale also features paintings by Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow (1850-1919) and Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821-1906), the latter of whom contemporary critics, including John Ruskin, hailed as Turner’s true successor in the medium of colour. Waterlow painted with a keen sensitivity to composition, light and tone, demonstrating a mastery of tonal harmonies in close composition. During his lifetime, Waterlow achieved success and recognition, including a knighthood and election as Royal Academician in 1903. Brabazon was also part of a distinguished circle of artists and collectors including John Singer Sargent, whose portrait he painted. Brabazon influenced younger artists such as Philip Wilson Steer (whose work is also featured in the sale), Sargent, and Claude Monet whom he counted as a friend.
The auction offers collectors the chance to acquire pieces of remarkable quality and provenance within a single auction. It reflects a reimagined approach to the traditional furniture market for a new generation of collector, presenting works that highlight exceptional craftsmanship and enduring quality, objects that carry with them the stories of many generations. These pieces bridge heritage and contemporary collecting, adding character and depth while complementing modern design, making for a distinguished addition to any home or collection.
Commenting on the auction, Head of the House Sales and Private Collections Department Joe Robinson said “This deeply personal collection is a map traced in oak, brass, and pigment, where every piece reveals the skill of its maker and the patina of time. It offers collectors an opportunity to acquire furniture and works of art with exceptional provenance and a compelling personal narrative, reflecting the close relationship of a father and son, and their dedication to quality and craftsmanship”.
