On Wednesday 21 October, we held our Autumn auction of Modern & Contemporary Art. The sale presented a significant group of works by the Anglo-French artist Paul Maze, alongside a special group of works from the Estates of Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden. The auction attracted interest from around the world and achieved a total of £1,370,000, 130% of the pre-sale estimate.
Reflecting on the day, Co-Head of Modern and Contemporary Art, Jennie Fisher said “We were thrilled with the result of the yesterday’s sale which saw an outstanding price for a wonderful painting by French post-Impressionist painter Albert Marquet, achieving four times the pre-sale low estimate with the hammer finally coming down at £320,000. The collection of works by Paul Maze from the Maze Spencer-Churchill family was really well received and generated substantial interest from international as well as UK based bidders, once again showing the strength and appeal of private collections. A new world record was set for the East London Group painters with a beautiful work of ‘Bow Bridge’ by Walter Steggles selling for a hammer price of £18,000 along with further strong prices for works from the estates of Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan.”
