On 8 July, Dreweatts held the first of its much anticipated annual Japanese Prints sales at its London gallery on Pall Mall. The auction saw spirited bidding for the coveted prints.
As was expected, the iconic images by the greatest of the Japanese art of printmaking - Kawase Hasui, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Katsushika Hokusai - commanded the highest prices, with Hokusai's world famous Under the Wave off Kanagawa selling for £378,200. But other pieces also sold well, such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi's dramatic image The Former Emperor (Sutoku) from Sanuki, as well as works by Yoshida Hiroshi, from his period travelling throughout Europe and Asia in the 1920s. Overall, the sale totalled £726,695 (incl. buyer's premium).
Co-Chairman Will Richards commented: 'We are delighted to be bringing dedicated Japanese sales to the market in the UK with Mark Hinton and Jon Adjetey. The results show there remains a strong international demand'.
