On Wednesday 19 November, we have our Fine Jewellery auction. The sale includes a stunning selection of jewellery by award-winning designer Roger Doyle. Renowned for his work in both jewellery and silverware, some of his pieces are held in the prestigious collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Roger Doyle began his career at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, undertaking a pre-apprenticeship course that led to a five-year apprenticeship at Cartier starting in 1963.
A key milestone in Doyle’s career was his collaboration with Louis Osman on the creation of the Investiture Crown for the then HRH Prince of Wales, now King Charles III. He also worked closely with celebrated engraver Malcolm Appleby.
Reflecting on his creative process, Doyle has said:
The selection of Roger Doyle jewellery opens with an exquisite kunzite, diamond, and seed pearl necklace. Its seed pearl torsade is enhanced by conical caps, each adorned with two rows of brilliant cut diamonds. Suspended from the necklace is a detachable pendant showcasing a striking oval-cut kunzite set within a faceted rock crystal frame. The pendant features a crown-shaped surmount accented with enamel and a delicate seed pearl tassel drop. This remarkable piece is beautifully presented in a fitted case by Roger Doyle London and is accompanied by the original signed design drawing of the pendant.
Another remarkable highlight is a versatile gem set piece that can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch. At its centre lies a stunning step cut aquamarine, which is surrounded by pavé set circular cut sapphires and diamonds. They are framed within a polished rock crystal, further enhanced by trios of brilliant-cut diamonds. Completing the design, the lozenge-shaped frame gracefully suspends a cultured pearl drop, adding an exquisite touch of elegance.
The Roger Doyle section continues with a sapphire and enamel wristwatch that comprises an oval mother-of-pearl dial with Roman quarters, accentuated with a diamond set crown, and black enamel lugs that are decorated with cabochon sapphire finials. The auction also features a brooch with a vibrant pear shaped tanzanite set beneath an oval-cut beryl, both encircled by a surround of brilliant-cut diamonds. The gemstones are mounted within an ornate frame of coronet and tassel design, combining intricate detail with graceful balance. The piece is unmarked and beautifully presented in a fitted case by Roger Doyle, London.
Concluding the Roger Doyle pieces is a striking opal and diamond necklace that features a ruthenium-plated orchid accented with brilliant-cut diamonds. At its centre rests a polished drop-shaped opal, radiating a captivating play of colour. The pendant is suspended from a graduated bead necklace, also ruthenium plated.
