In our upcoming auction of Fine Wine, Vintage Port & Spirits, taking place on Wednesday 5 & Thursday 6 November, we are delighted to present a small but important collection from Clos de La Roche and Clos St Denis 1990-2005.
Domaine Dujac is a relatively young Domaine, founded in 1968 by Jacques Seysses. Dujac being a play on his name “The estate that Jacques owns”. The estate was originally started with just 5 hectares in Morey St Denis and has expanded to 16 Hectares across both the Cotes du Nuits and Cotes de Beaune. Ahead of the auction, Dreweatts’ Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson, tells us more.
There is no doubt that in this short time Domaine Dujac is now not only at the very pantheon of Burgundy but also at the summit of wines made anywhere on earth. A staggering achievement, but one that comes as no surprise. Some of the finest wines I have ever tried have been from here and particularly from the era that we are offering today. These wines are known for their fragrance, structure and longevity. If I was to introduce someone to how profound Red Burgundy can be, it would always be Dujac that I would reach for.
All the wines below were purchased directly from the estate on first release and stored in perfect conditions in a purpose-built cellar in England.
I hand over to the family to share more about the estate — their memories and stories of visiting Domaine Dujac — and to bring a personal touch to buying wine and connecting with the people and places it comes from, something we all miss when simply clicking through an auction or merchant online.
It is a great privilege to offer wines not only from this estate, but also to be part of a family’s history and shared passion.
Wine always brings people together… be it a father and son or friend and stranger - these wines below celebrate that.
Mark Robertson, Dreweatts
The early 1990s were a good time to be looking for fine Burgundy. The general standard of winemaking had improved immeasurably from the inconsistencies of previous decades. Growers had had several substantial and fine harvests in succession and had a deal of wine on their hands as export markets were then less well-developed and claret was then still much in vogue, Bordeaux having also enjoyed a similar succession of fine vintages. So it was that my father was fortunate to be able to gain entry to taste and buy at a number of Côte d’Or Domaines which earlier or later would not have been in a position to accept further private clients. It was understood that you would be expected to take pretty much the same wines in each successive vintage, whether it had been a success or not, and at whatever price the vigneron decided to set. In return, the vigneron would try to ensure your allocation was ringfenced and welcome you for a tasting annually....Read more.
