A Glimpse of a Fabled Land: the Romance of Anglo-Indian Art | Old Master British & European Art | 11 June 2025

The last few years have seen a growth in interest for Anglo-Indian art, chiefly as a result of Indian collectors focusing their attention on acquiring works by British artists who worked in India during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Dreweatts has been at the forefront of this development, working with collectors to help them secure works by the likes of, among others, pioneering artists Thomas and his nephew William Daniell, whose images from their travels throughout the Indian subcontinent are highly coveted. Their watercolour painting of Dusasumade Gaut, Benares, Uttar Pradesh (1789) sold at Dreweatts for £300,200. Thomas Daniell’s Panchganga and Durga Ghats, Benares, India, circa 1800 for £237,500. William Daniell’s beautifully atmospheric Karva Chauth sold for £137,500.

Our forthcoming auction of Old Master, British & European Art on 11 June 2025, features a selection of Anglo-Indian paintings including works by Thomas and William Daniell, Arthur William Devis and Edward Lear.  Here we take a look at some of the highlights, past and present.
