In our Fine Wine, Champagne, Vintage Port and Spirits auction, taking place on Wednesday 28 May, we are delighted to offer a half bottle of 1821 Groot Constantia, Grand Constance Muscat. Ahead of the auction, Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson, tells us more about this extraordinary vintage.
Groot Constancia is South Africa’s oldest wine estate, consistently producing wine since 1685. Much of the 1821 vintage was earmarked for Napoleon, while serving out his exile on St Helena. Guarded by 3000 soldiers on a wind-swept Atlantic Island is enough to drive the most pious to drink, so it is not surprising that records suggest that 30 bottles were drunk per month.
This was not a case of beggars can’t be choosers, as this was and continues to be one of South Africa’s finest sweet wines and although he may have had many faults - his taste was outstanding.
Having died in 1821 Napoleon never had an opportunity to drink this vintage but instead that privilege is now entrusted to a Dreweatts client. With only a handful of bottles remaining in existence this is an extraordinary opportunity to own this important piece of vinous history.
This significant bottle is being sold on behalf of a celebrated Mayfair restaurateur and part of his collection.
Continuing our series of selling bottles nearly drunk by 19th century statesmen, in July 2022 we sold a 1850-1870 Sherry that was found in the cellars of the Duke of Wellington's London home Apsley House.
This is a live online auction with an auctioneer. The auction will take place on Wednesday 28 May (starting at 10.30am BST) at Dreweatts Newbury, but please note all wine and spirits are stored off-site at LCB Eton Park. Bidding is available online, by telephone, by commission bids or in person at Dreweatts.
