Amongst the more traditional pictures, a stunning portrait of William Leyborne attributed to Mather Brown, had until 1985 resided at Littlecote House, near Hungerford and close to Donnington Priory. It performed particularly well, realising an aggregate price of £15,000 against pre-sale estimates of £7,000-10,000.
A sympathetic and declicate late 17th century / early 18th century Dutch School oil on canvas, titled: Portrait of a lady with pearls, achieved £1,875.
Landscape with a Waterfall, Cottage and Bridge by Dutch artist Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682), also sold successfully at £62,500.
Country road with cottage and figures by Frederick Waters Watts (British 1800-1862), sold for £3,750 well above its pre-sale estimates of £1,000-1,500.
This beautiful and vibrant work, by French artist Emile Antoine Bayard (1837-1891) of a nude draped in blue cloth, The Blue Lady, reached £10,000, it was estimated at £4,000-6,000.
From the modern section in the auction a group of five paintings by the Scottish artist, Jack Vettriano, proved very popular and were heavily contested with the works collectively achieving £208,750.
Notable prices were also achieved for a compelling sculpture in bronze, by Sir Jacob Epstein (American/British 1880-1959) of Indian poet and musician, Rabindranath Tagore, the work was conceived in 1926; it was enthusiastically contested and sold for £16,250.
An intricately worked oil on panel by Maxwell Ashby Armfield (British 1882-1972), All Washed and Ready, also saw competitive bidding, to £4,375, with pre-sale estimates of £1,500-2,000.
The impressive and bold oil, Still life with lemons and wool, by Italian artist, Oscar Ghiglia (Italian 1876-1945) sold for £20,000.
