Over 50 Model Locomotives to be Auctioned at April’s Transport Sale

More than 200 lots have been consigned to Dreweatts' Transport Sale which takes place on Tuesday 7 April 2020.

For model locomotive enthusiasts, the sale presents a unique opportunity to purchase more than 50 models, ranging from gauge 1 up to 7 ¼ gauge.

To help get you started, our Live Steam and Model Engineering specialist, Michael Matthews, has chosen six models he expects to garner plenty of attention during the sale.

Key features include:

  • Chassis with twin outside cylinders, fluted motion, water injector and Walschaerts valve gear
  • Eight-wheel double bogie tender with fitted tool boxes
  • Traditional Southern Railways green and black lined livery

Michael expects a locomotive of this quality to achieve between £5,000 - £7,000 (+ fees) at April’s Transport Sale.

Lot 56: A fine exhibition-standard model of a 7 1/4 inch gauge British Railways Class 4T 2-6-4 tank locomotive No 80008

Construction of this 7 1/4 inch gauge British Railways Class 4T 2-6-4 tank locomotive was first started by Mr R Cheal of Bath.

After completing the frames, wheels, cylinders, coupling and connecting rods to a high standard, Mr Cheal was forced to retire from the build in poor health. Shortly after Mr T Dixon of Southwick took over and saw the build of this exquisite locomotive through to completion.

Key features include:

  • Super-heated copper boiler with four elements supplied by Paul Gammon
  • Boiler backhead with two three-cock water gauges by Dave Noble
  • Reverser with spring loaded locking lever and direction indicator
  • Blow down valve on each side of the fire box
  • Chassis with twin outside cylinders and piston valves
  • Steam operated drain valves fitted to cylinders
  • Overall length 175 cm
  • Cab width 38cm

The model has never been steamed and comes together with firing tools, boiler instructions and the relevant certificates. Michael has given this locomotive a presale estimate of £15,000 - £20,000 (+ fees).

  • Stephenson valve gear copied exactly from the full size locomotive
  • Vacuum brakes, vacuum ejector and brake valve in cab
  • Traditional Great Western Railway green livery
  • Overall length 229 cm
