Hafiz Osman (1642-1698AD) is widely recognised as the greatest Ottoman calligrapher. He is known for his own distinctive adaptation of the naskh script and is also accredited for the creation of hilyes. Osman was highly regarded by Sultan Mustafa II, and was tutor to the royal Sultans Ahmed II, Mustafa II and Ahmed III.
