Philip was born in London in 1943 and lived at Durham Wharf until the age of five, after which he was raised in rural East Sussex, as well as remaining a regular visitor to London. He studied painting at the Department of Fine Art at Newcastle University, followed by attendance at the Department of Film and TV at the Royal College of Art. Subsequently he made a small collection of 12 documentary films, a number of which received awards, including the well known ‘Moon and the Sledgehammer.’ In 1975, Philip and his wife Nelly, bought a 100-acre farm in Yorkshire, where they have lived and worked ever since. When asked, Philip continues to make the occasional film about places or connected to the arts.
