This February, we are delighted to be offering the contents of Warwick House in our timed online auction Warwick House: Beyond Borders. The auction, ending on Tuesday 7 February, offers a wonderful variety of furniture, works of art, sculpture, clocks, decorative objects and traditional British and European art. Here we take a look at some of the highlights.
Some forty years ago, in the Hampshire countryside, a South American gentleman and his French wife found their English pastoral idyll, and at Warwick House together formed their collection of English and French furniture, paintings and works of art. Guided by English traditional interiors, but inspired by their life and travels in France and Spain, the collector - a genealogist and historian - and his wife visited local dealers and auction houses to fill the house with their chosen treasures.
His interest in chess is reflected not only in his friendship with Anatoly Karpov but also in the superb painting ‘A Game of Chess’ by Louis Jambor (lot 52), the artist chosen to work on murals at Mar-a-Lago, the renowned Florida mansion built in the 1920s for Marjorie Merriweather Post (currently owned by Donald Trump). Other highlights include a marvellous French clock, made in the Empire period and surmounted by a nude warrior figure (lot 16). This stood on a beautiful French mahogany commode of the first half of the 19th century (lot 13), flanked by a pair of unusual gilt bronze candelabra, designed in a Gothic flavour, and also French, early 19th century in date (lot 15). The collection was carefully assembled to reflect the owners' international tastes and interests, with a strong nod to English history.
Welcoming us into the house is a powerful English 17th century depiction of the royalist 1st Duke of Beaufort, a loyal supporter of Charles II and his brother James II. Beyond, a heroic portrait of Richard I ‘The Lionheart’ (lot 112) which looks across to Philip IV of Spain (lot 102), meanwhile the rare rediscovered portrait of the Spanish Ambassador to France and Governor of Cuba, the Count of Viñaza (lot 113) looks on.
In the drawing room hang two pairs of portraits. Lot 44, the larger pair, depicts the Sutton family, of Seton, County Durham, painted as double portraits; beside them hang Louis, the Dauphin and Maria Josepha de Saxe, the Dauphine (lot 46). In the same room is a detailed portrait of an unidentified French officer, masterfully painted by the Prussian academy artist Anton von Werner (lot 45).
In the decorative arts, the range is as broad - comprising French Empire gilt bronze clocks, nineteenth-century chandeliers with wall lights to match, Louis XVI seat furniture, stout English walnut and mahogany tables and chairs, and an unusual 1920s German bronze chandelier with a classical figure by Schmidt-Hofer (lot 130). This international couple have now decided that after forty years on this side of The Channel it is time to return to France, and find new homes for their cherished objects.
