Coming up on Thursday 25 February we have our Fine and Rare Wine and Spirits auction. Ahead of the auction Mark Robertson, Head of Dreweatts Wine Department, picks out some of the fantastic everyday drinking wines that the auction has to offer.
When asked to comment on highlights from an upcoming sale, I am always torn between suggesting the great and the good, the rarely seen, or wines that I know and love. This time I would like to introduce you to the latter.
First we take a look at this 2000 Gewurztraminer produced by Domaine Weinbach, a benchmark Domaine in the Alsace. It was made by Laurence Faller, who died suddenly and tragically young in 2014, and was regarded as one of the finest winemakers of her generation in the world.
This Gewurztraminer is the perfect expression of these noblest of grapes which only the best wine makers can really capture. A superb wine to start a meal, pairing with shellfish, salty meats or just on its own to loosen up the tastebuds.
Then we have a 2003 Carmignano from one of my favourite estates - Mauro Vannucci, located in a small part of Tuscany just north of Florence. This is a beautifully made Sangiovese/Cabernet blend that makes the heart beat faster (only in the good way). Medium bodied, with a silky texture, at 18 years old it has just become an adult and is at it's finest now.
Finally, I want to share with you this 2004 Chateau La Gurgue. It comes from a small estate owned by the same team as Chateau Chasse Spleen. I remember when we tasted this for the first time in Bordeaux on first release. We all stood back and thought what amazing value. 15 years later, I have not tasted it since, but have never forgotten it and have no doubt that the new owner will be in for a treat this year. It's not going to be for the long term, but for that quiet Friday night Bordeaux at the end of the week... it is quite simply perfect.
