One of the most interesting lots consigned to our Summer Sale is a Wilton carpet that once belonged to the former British Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin.
From 1924 to 1935, Baldwin served three separate terms as Prime Minister. The conservative party statesman dominated the British government between the wars.
After his retirement Baldwin was held in high esteem by many of his peers and much of the British public. He is also the only British prime minister to serve under three different monarchs.
The Wilton carpet (lot 284) consigned to our sale was initially presented to Mrs Baldwin by the town of Kidderminster in 1928.
In the 1960s Mr Hugo Baldwin Huntinton-Whiteley, the grandson of Stanley Baldwin, purchased Ripple Hall, a stately home in the Gloucestershire countryside, and here the Wilton carpet remained until being consigned to our August Interiors sale.
The Wilton carpet, which our interiors experts expect to achieve between £800 - £1200, will be sold with a satirical cartoon of Stanley Baldwin struggling with the carpet during a visit to Dudley the day after it was presented to Mrs Baldwin.
Stanley Baldwin’s Wilton carpet (lot 284) is just one of the fascinating interior pieces from Ripple Hall that will be sold during our auction at Donnington Priory in Newbury on Wednesday 21st of August.
