Meursault: Domaine Coche-Dury and Domaine des Comtes Lafon
Dreweatts' Wine Department are delighted to present in their October auction of Fine and Rare Wine and Spirits, a rare opportunity to acquire some of Burgundy’s most revered wines. The wine (Lots 37-85) is from a portfolio of two of the greatest and most important wine estates in Europe. Offered under bond and stored in temperature controlled bonded storage since first release.

The best Meursault is characteristically rich and sumptuous, with the creamy silky balanced style lending itself to being enjoyed at a young age. Often described (rather extravagantly) as baroque, the two greatest proponents of Meursault are Domaine Coche-Dury and Domaine des Comtes Lafon, both revered across the world. To put simply – the benchmarks of great Chardonnay.
The wines are raised in entirely different circumstances: Domaine Lafon could be likened to having been raised with a silver spoon amidst the extensive cellars of the grandest of village houses. Coche-Dury on the other hand… raised under less privileged circumstances, in the cellars of the more modest of suburban houses. Both, however, raised with the most loving of parents, nurtured in their separate environments and fused with nature to create two distinct, complex and individual styles.
A word from Dreweatts' Head of Wine
Commenting on the wines ahead of next week's auction, Mark Robertson said:
“The Coche wines have a famous ability to age with that distinctive struck match flavour - a style often imitated but never rivalled. The Lafons are more open, fruity and share their delightful notes earlier in life. There is not a single bottle in this collection, I would not hesitate to open now. Served slightly chilled, never too cold, and do not shy from decanting. Food and wine pairing is a matter of personal choice - my only advice would be to give these wines a very deserved, centre stage.”
Vintage Notes:
- 2009: Exotic in character, with ripe fruit, fleshy textures and soft structures
- 2010: Clean and pure, showing ripe fruit flavours, without being too rich or powerful
- 2011: Charming, fleshy wines, with ripe fruit and slender profiles
- 2012: Low yields led to rich, concentrated wines; best have firmed up, with good acidity
- 2013: The best are sleek and vibrant, with complexity, even creaminess
- 2014: An excellent vintage, showing great potential; wines are rich and ripe, with density and concentration
