Taking place on Wednesday 21 October, our autumn auction of Modern & Contemporary Art brings together an impressive selection of works by artists including Albert Marquet, Augustus John and Julian Trevelyan, alongside the remarkable Maze Spencer-Churchill Collection. The collection reflects the friendship between Anglo-French post-Impressionist painter Paul Maze and Lord Ivor Spencer-Churchill, an early 20th-century collector of modern French painting. Bringing together works that have been cherished by the family for generations, the collection is now offered at auction by Robert and Jeanne Churchill, whose family histories are intimately connected to both men.
As Robert explains, “For my wife Jeanne and I, this is a personal sale. Paul Maze was Jeanne’s grandfather, and Ivor Churchill was my father. For Jeanne, Paul was the grandfather who inspired her to become an artist. For me, he was my father’s great friend.”
Ahead of the auction, Robert and Jeanne revisit the collection, and take a look at the wider auction, sharing some of their favourite pieces.
No. 1
Lot 130: λ Augustus John (British 1878-1961), ‘Dorelia wearing a shawl’, Pencil | Est. £10,000-15,000 (+ fees)
"I remember Paul recounting a wonderful story about having quite an eventful lunch with Augustus, but that's maybe for another time! This drawing is a beautiful example of John’s exquisite draftsmanship. He manages to instil such depth of personality with the simplest of touches."
No. 2
Lot 95: Albert Marquet (French 1875-1947), ‘Le Pont de Conflans’, Oil on canvas | Est. £80,000-120,000 (+ fees)
"One of the first exhibitions I recall was the Marlborough Gallery tribute exhibition that they put on for Paul in 1967. It contained works by many of his friends and artists that he had worked with or admired. There were three beautiful Albert Marquets in that exhibition and this work reminds me of their clean, bold execution, exuding the fresh, bracing air of Northern France."
No. 3
Lot 195: λ Julian Trevelyan (British 1910-1988), ‘Ratatouille Niçoise’, Oil on canvas | Est. £8,000-12,000 (+ fees)
"Living in France, I love the idea of preparing a Ratatouille while watching the sailing boats out at sea. How romantic!"
No. 4
Lot 255: λ Victor Pasmore (British 1908-1998), ‘Linear Movement’, Oil, gouache, pencil and collage and gravure on board | Est. £15,000-25,000 (+ fees)
"The way Pasmore focuses on the surface and the making of marks on the surface of this work of art is really interesting. Its apparent simplicity belies the subtle variations in medium and technique that he has employed to create a very balanced and serene work."
No. 5
Lot 28: Violet, Duchess Of Rutland (British 1856-1937), ‘Portrait of Consuelo Duchess of Marlborough’, Pencil | Est. £1,000-1,500 (+ fees)
"The drawing of my grandmother is a very delicate expression of her beauty and elegance, in an understated and non flamboyant manner. A complete contrast to the drypoint by Helleu."
No. 6
Lot 9: λ Paul Lucien Maze (French/British 1887-1979), ‘St Malo’, Oil on canvas | Est. £5,000-8,000 (+ fees)
"'St Malo, boats in harbour', is a wonderful composition with everything balanced. His control of oil is really masterful."
No. 7
Lot 5: λ Paul Lucien Maze (French/British 1887-1979), ‘View of Deauville’, Watercolour over traces of pencil | Est. £2,000-3,000 (+ fees)
"The figures, striped beach huts and flags fluttering in the sea breeze have a lightness of touch that perfectly captures the sense of movement on the beachfront."
No. 8
Lot 43: λ Paul Lucien Maze (French/British 1887-1979), ‘The Kitchen Table’, Oil on canvas | Est. £4,000-6,000 (+ fees)
"The Kitchen Table is a masterful still life, as powerful as Andre Derain’s 'La Table de Cuisine' in the Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris. At the time this work was painted, Paul had a neighbouring studio to Derain on the rue Bonaparte in Paris and they became great friends."
No. 9
Lot 71: λ Paul Lucien Maze (French/British 1887-1979), ‘Pont Neuf, Paris’, Pastel on buff paper | Est. £3,000-5,000 (+ fees)
"I think this work in particular shows Paul’s mastery of the medium of pastel. He has distilled his palette down to the absolute essential colours to capture this winter’s day on the Seine in Paris. Just looking at the sky and water makes me shiver!"
No. 10
Lot 78: λ Paul Lucien Maze (French/British 1887 - 1979), ‘Still Life with Sculpture’, Oil on board | Est. £5,000-8,000 (+ fees)
"This 'Still Life with Sculpture' painting is a particular favourite of mine, beautifully observed. We actually still have the terracotta sculpture of the female torso that is depicted in the painting, so it is rather special to us."
