Taking place on Wednesday 21 October, our Modern & Contemporary Art auction presents a significant group of works by the Anglo-French artist Paul Maze, alongside letters exchanged with Sir Winston Churchill. Here, we explore Maze’s remarkable life as both a celebrated artist and highly decorated soldier, and his friendships with some of the most prominent figures of the 20th century.
Paul Maze first exhibited in 1914 with Jos Hessel in Paris. He went on to show for the next 60 years in some of the most celebrated galleries in London, Paris and New York. These included the Leicester Galleries, Marlborough Fine Art, Galerie Georges Bernheim, Wildenstein & Co and Acquavella Galleries. Indeed there are few British artists of the 20th Century that could boast such a coveted exhibition roster stretching throughout their life.
It is, therefore easy to forget that Maze was also a highly decorated soldier, awarded the British Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal with Bar, as well as the French Croix de Guerre and the Legion d’honneur.
This unique combination of bravery in conflict and a joyous celebration of life through art brought him many admirers and friends at every level of society. The letters in this collection show that Maze and Churchill were in constant communication during World War II with Churchill even writing to him from the White House in Washington on 17th May 1943 thanking him for his suggestion of broadcasting to the Home Guard.
Surely there can be no other artist who simultaneously had works in the collections of Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt and Stalin, all be it to the dismay of Clementine Churchill!
Consuelo Duchess of Marlborough, Winston Churchill, the Prince of Wales, Anthony Eden and Laurance Rockefeller were all close friends of Maze and in turn willing collectors of his wonderful pastels and oil paintings.
