From 25 February - 11 March 2021 Dreweatts will host this wonderful timed online auction, offering a great opportunity to bid on and own an original postcard sized artwork by an outstanding female contemporary artist.
Ahead of the auction, Dreweatts Picture Specialists, Jennie Fisher, Lucy Darlington and Francesca Whitham pick out their favourite lots.
Lot 59 | Remix I, 2021 by Vanessa Jackson RA
"I love the offsetting of different geometric shapes in this composition coupled with the bright vibrant colours. The use of collage serves to give the work a 3D effect and you can absolutely see how such a design would work on a large scale as wall art."
Lot 114 | Winter River 2 by Frances Ryan
"The layering of different materials and paints create an interesting and organic feel to this work. It is at once subtle and understated but the kind of work that gives the viewer different areas of interest each time you look at it."
Lot 125 | Study for Field (2), 2021 by Haruka Hashiguchi
"I was immediately drawn to this work. The intricate use of embroidery provides a completely different experience and muted white tones emanate an air of calm and order which appealed to me."
Lot 37 | Two Birds, 2020 by Anita Klein
"This is my favourite work in the auction. The naïve drawing style is playful and calming and as soon as I look at this work I feel instantly happier; the birds almost look as though they are smiling as they walk along and as soon as I noticed this, I observed that I was smiling to myself in return."
Lot 277 | The Bird's Tale, 2021 by Chloë Manasseh
"The simplicity of each brush stroke adds to a feeling of depth and movement despite the limited colour palate employed in this work. The blue and white remind me of a 17th century Dutch ceramic tile depicting exotic birds newly discovered in a foreign land."
Lot 456 | Butterfly Dreams, 2021 by Christina Burch
"I love the contrasting colours in this work. The simplicity of the bold outlines together with the overlapping composition of the insects, fruit and tree suggest a subtle influence of design from the Far East."
Lot 180 | Velvet Cheek, 2021 by Clare Dudeney
"Bright, colourful and vibrant. Whilst this study is ‘pink’ we see how many different shades and tones can be created from one colour and this has always fascinated me. The forms are built together across the sheet, only separated by their different tones which is extremely effective."
Lot 203 | Two Meters Apart, 2021 by Nettie Wakefield
"As a dog lover I couldn’t resist this piece. Man’s best friend has become more important than ever as they have supported us through this extremely unusual and difficult year. Having a dog by my side has encouraged me to take my exercise outside and break away from my desk which has been extremely important for my mental wellbeing. I particularly like the composition of this piece as the single figure and dog appear to be floating in the space, which emphasises the loneliness we have all felt during these unprecedented times."
Lot 302 | Venus, 2021 by Caroline Millar
"I am particularly drawn to the subdued colour palette and the use of mixed media and collage to create this striking postcard. I love the way Millar has incorporated word into the design, as a collector of vintage postcards, I find this technique particularly interesting and it makes me want to study the work further and find out more about the meaning behind the words."
