On Tuesday 4 March, Dreweatts held the auction Spirit of Place: The Collection of Melissa Ulfane. This deeply thoughtful collection offered fine furniture, design, Islamic art, decorative art, photography, and textiles, as well as an exceptional array of fine art including Old Masters and contemporary masters.
The auction captivated collectors worldwide and achieved a total of £1,550,000 (including buyer's premium), 209% of the pre-sale estimate. Reflecting on the success, Chairman Will Richards said, "We were delighted for Melissa that the sale was such a success after an enjoyable and positive collaboration. Melissa has a wonderful eye and aesthetic, and she had created an exquisite collection drawing from many different cultures and disciplines. This resonated with a wide international audience that engaged enthusiastically with the sale."
Accumulated over many years, the collection was infused with a deep respect for the concept of 'the spirit of place', a guiding philosophy inspired by the homes that Melissa Ulfane inhabited in London, Paris, Venice and Tangiers, as well as the memories of her many voyages. Exposed to a rich mix of influences, Ulfane acquired an aptitude for unexpected combinations and a layering of cultures and textures to create a depth which speaks of the timeless allure of well-curated interiors and the enduring power of cultural exchange. The collection came to be showcased in a hôtel particulier in one of Paris’ oldest royal squares, restored by leading French architect Laurent Bourgois and decorated with the help of Hugh Henry of Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi.
