Our two-day auction of Fine Furniture, Works of Art & Decorations on Tuesday 27 & Wednesday 28 October offered an exceptional selection of fine and rare objects, including works from a number of distinguished private collections. The sale totalled £1.61 million including several notable results highlighted below.
For this auction, we were delighted to collaborate with Benham Park, the Georgian estate situated just a few miles from Dreweatts Newbury. This remarkable historic setting provided the backdrop for our catalogue photography and auction viewing, allowing the pieces to be presented in interiors that spoke to their historical context. Over four days, we welcomed more than 500 clients to Benham Park to view the collection. With excellent catering provided by Clean Slate, the occasion offered a particularly inviting opportunity to explore the works and take shelter from the weather conditions brought by Storm Austen.
Commenting on the results, Dreweatts Specialist Elaine Binning said, “Among the many highlights of the sale, 18th century furniture and works of art proved particularly strong performers. This may, in part, reflect how naturally these pieces sat within the magnificent Georgian interiors of Benham Park during the auction viewing.
“Highly crafted George III furniture attracted considerable interest, particularly pieces attributed to John Linnell. A set of four giltwood armchairs (Lot 118) achieved £76,450, while a pair of mahogany armchairs (Lot 129) sold for £16,640.
“Other notable 18th-century results spanned a broad range of categories. Among the ceramics, a large Japanese Arita vase (Lot 229) realised £10,880. Indo-Portuguese furniture performed well, with an Indian rosewood and exotic wood marquetry cabinet on stand (Lot 292) achieving £23,040, while a Sultanabad carpet (Lot 179) sold for £14,080. Works of art included a lead figure of the Capitoline Antinous, after the Antique, by John Cheere (Lot 78), which realised £12,160, and a George III painted, parcel gilt and marble console table (Lot 148), which achieved £24,320.
“The joint top price of the auction was a pair of French Restauration ebony, Boulle and ormolu mounted side cabinets (Lot 478). These came from the collection of Comte Frédéric Chandon de Briailles, and attracted competitive bidding, finally achieving £76,450.”
