Louis Jadot

Located in the heart of Beaune, and one of the leading negotiant houses in Burgundy, we are delighted to offer a mature collection from Maison Louis Jadot. 

Founded by Louis-Henry Jadot in 1859. The House has carefully established and maintained the quality of their wines for over 160 years through the steady acquisition of the best vineyards in Burgundy. 

With extensive vineyard holdings covering 270 hectares and divided between three domains, Louis Jadot itself, Les Héritiers de Louis Jadot and Domaine André Gagey, and further rental agreements with domains such as the Duc de Magenta, Louis Jadot is considered by many to have one of the finest winemaking reputations in Burgundy. For red wines, temperature control is eschewed; allowing fermentation to start of its own accord and hence forward the temperature sets its own course. The length of maceration is long and thus results in a rich and powerful style even in lighter appellations, which repays laying down.

When creating the white wines, standard practice is to stop the malolactic fermentation to retain higher acidity. In less favorable years, contrary to normal practice, a little more new oak is used. However, the main aim for both reds and whites is to use as little oak as possible in order to let the terroir and the vintage sing out loud. 

Jacques Lardière the winemaker for all the wines featured in the sale was a hugely celebrated and charismatic figure at Louis Jadot and valued the less expensive village wines as highly as he did the Grands crus. The wines have all been stored in perfect conditions since first release. The Red Wines are predominately made up of Grand and 1er Cru Vineyards and a recent tasting of the Chambolle Feusselottes and their monopole Beaune Clos des Ursules show wines that are drinking at their peak now and will continue to age effortlessly for the foreseeable future.

The white wines from 1996 and 1997 vintages will no doubt have some bottle variation. The wines that Dreweatts have tasted all showed some youthful freshness entwined with the expected maturity of wines that age and thankfully no sign of the dreaded oxidization. We would however advise these wines are drunk within the next couple of years. These whites are not wines if you like them zingy and youthful but they are textured mature white Burgundy that will sing with food and give immense pleasure. The 1996 Meursault Perrieres was a favourite and showed complexity and richness.
