A Rare Bottle of Screaming Eagle to be offered at Auction | Fine and Rare Wine and Spirits, September 2020
Coming up we have our Fine and Rare Wine and Spirits auction on 17 September. This will be a truly exciting sale including some of the greatest and rarest wines from all over the world. Ahead of the sale, Mark Robertson, Head of Dreweatts' Wine department, picks out his top highlight, a rare bottle of 1992 Screaming Eagle.
1992 Screaming Eagle
It takes a special bottle to relegate the likes of Domaine Roumier and Henri Jayer. There will be eyebrows raised but I am afraid in this case the “special relationship” trumps the entente cordiale.
Ever since the first vintage, Screaming Eagle, with it’s strict allocation system and tiny production of 500 cases has been a holy grail for wine lovers and created wine folklore in 2000 when a 6 litre bottle of the 1992 Vintage fetched $500,000 at a charity auction – making it the world’s most expensive bottle of wine ever sold.
There were only 175 cases of the inaugural vintage 1992 produced and the bottle offered by Dreweatts is one of only three available on the global market for sale.
The 1992 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 60% in new oak. I am afraid my rather shallow pockets have never given me an opportunity to taste Screaming Eagle. They say never meet your heroes, so perhaps it is for the best. Price aside, Screaming Eagle is a contender for the finest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in California. The wine is said to display intense purity, balance, soft textures and a unique character that makes this a true world-class wine. Screaming Eagle is not about power, it’s about elegant, refined, pure fruit and rich, silky, velvet drenched textures.
The estate also make 30 cases of the Sauvignon Blanc per year or just one barrel – we are delighted to offer the 2013 Vintage, the 2nd vintage of this wine.
